Amazfit presented its T-Rex. A quality-price watch for high mountain sports, athletics, intensive strength training, and other demanding sports. Its successor is the T-Rex 2, a discreet renovation that preserves the fundamental aspects of the first generation T-Rex, improving key points such as screen and battery.
The Amazfit T-Rex 2, the company’s most adventurous watch, passes through our analysis table. A more ambitious, more expensive look with the same essence. Will it be the evolution that the T-Rex deserved? Let’s check it out.
A design with military resistance !
Amazfit promises that its T-Rex 2 has up to 15 “military certifications” under the MIL-STD-810G resistance protocol as in the previous generation. In the real world, this implies that it has passed 15 of the 29 tests that the MIL-STD-810G standard certifies, although it does not specify which ones. In the same way, it is indicated that it can withstand temperatures between 70ºC and -40ºC, as well as the possibility of submerging it to a depth of up to 100 meters.
The “military resistance” implies that the watch has passed more tests than usual, but it does not make it indestructible. Amazfit recommends special care with high-temperature vapors, such as from the shower.
A watch with “military resistance” makes it, a priori, more resistant to extreme conditions. However, there is a good deal of marketing here, and without going any further, Amazfit recommends that we take off the T-Rex 2 in the shower since the steam “can affect the sealing of the device.” Extreme resistance, but not that much.
In the purely aesthetic section, we are facing a watch similar to what was seen last year. It is significant, thick, and bulky, with dimensions of 47.1 x 47.1 x 13.65 millimeters for a circular body. What surprises me again is the weight. Although it has “picked up pounds” compared to the previous generation, it weighs only 66 grams, making it surprisingly light for its thickness.
At the design level, it is very similar to the T-Rex. A robust and bulky watch, but with a very successful weight that makes it light on the wrist
Despite being finished in plastic, the build quality is exquisite. It is robust, well finished, without any movement on the buttons or screws, and with a screen well protected by the circular bezel. The four buttons “Up,” “Down,” “Select,” and “Back” return perfectly describes the actions that each of them executes. In this generation, there is not so much “clicking,” better finished off and more solid when pressing them.
I don’t like too much that there are so many buttons. The touch screen supplies all the functions of the same, and a small crown would have been more elegant and less confusing.
Finally, note that the strap is easily adaptable to any wrist, thanks to its multiple perforations. Unlike in many smartwatches, we cannot change it for a conventional 22mm one, a small point against it.
In short, the Amazfit T-Rex 2 is a bulky watch, somewhat uncomfortable for day-to-day use (especially for sleeping). Still, it arrives to be as resistant as possible, so it does not seek to be the most stylized or elegant. The build quality is excellent, and that’s what matters.
Performance and software: there is much to improve
Amazfit repeats with AmazfitOS, an operating system that does not have its application store but does not lack functionalities of any kind. The first thing that struck me about this T-Rex 2 is how fast and fluid it moves. Without reaching the heights of the best watches with WearOS or the Apple Watch, it is a very smooth watch, it responds quickly, and there is no trace of lag or the occasional slight micro pull.
Another positive point is how fast it connects to GPS, being compatible, according to Amazfit, with five satellite positioning systems. If GPS is important to us when buying a watch, the T-Rex 2 performs well.
Amazfit Spheres
We have many spheres, being able to configure them from the watch itself or, more conveniently, from the Zepp app on iOS and Android. The spheres are customizable, so we can adjust some of the elements that appear in them. This is where we miss a crown again since it is pretty tedious to go around configuring aspects of a few millimeters in a sphere on such a small screen.
A great AMOLED screen
The screen grows this generation considerably, from 1.3 inches for the T-Rex to 1.39 inches for this generation, respecting AMOLED technology. In devices as “small” as smart watches, this increase in the panel is greatly appreciated, which by numbers may seem more minor. The resolution increases to 454 x 454 pixels. The oleophobic treatment can be improved, and in a few minutes of e-use, we will already have the screen full of fingerprints.
The screen of the Amazfit T-Rex 2 is more significant and with more resolution. The good automatic brightness puts the icing on the use of OLED technology.
We liked the work of the automatic brightness, which works at the level of a mid-high-end smartphone. The screen’s response is also good, without delays and being quite sensitive to touches. For those who do not want any disconnection with the clock, it Always has On Display mode, at the cost of spending more battery.
It is a high-quality screen in general terms, with which we will have no problem viewing its content in full sun in high mountains, nor will it dazzle us when night falls. Larger size, higher resolution, and the always welcome addition of having AMOLED technology.
